Ember is a Residential Support Worker at Spencer High Support Housing, a residence dedicated to meeting the needs of trans people in our community. They understand their struggles. “People don’t realize how hard it is for trans folks to just exist in the world,” they said. Their journey reflects significant personal growth; they moved to Canada in 2009, shortly after beginning their gender transition, and their professional aspiration to become a social worker grew. “Individuals accessing Spencer are all at different levels of transition and at different stages in their lives,” they pointed out.

They noted that those accessing Spencer House are navigating different stages of transition and life. This diversity of experience is something Ember relates to personally. Drawing from their own journey, they connect with those seeking support during tough times, assuring them that though their journeys differ, they can offer understanding and reliable advice. When asked what they wish people understood about their work, Ember shares, “Trans folks are just like everyone else and can be successful in anything and everything that they do with the proper supports and assistance in breaking down barriers.”

Spencer High Support Housing provides housing and residential support for adults living with mental health challenges and were unhoused and identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender expansive.
